Certain people have jobs that are considered safety sensitive and are governed by the Department of Transportation (DOT).
People in these job categories are required to see specially trained chemical dependency counselors known as Substance Abuse Professionals (SAPs).
The DOT has mandated all employees in safety sensitive positions in need of a substance abuse assessment be referred to and evaluated by a counselor with the SAP credential.
As of December 31, 2003, The Department of Transportation (DOT) has mandated all employees in safety sensitive positions and in need of a substance abuse assessment, must be referred to and evaluated by a Certified Substance Abuse Professional (SAP).
SAPs must have the appropriate credentials, knowledge of DOT rules, qualification training, and successfully passed a written exam in order to be recognized by The Department of Transportation.
